Services

Forestry Mulching.

One machine grinds the cedar, brush and scrub into a mulch bed and leaves it on the ground as cover.

How it works

A mulching head grinds standing brush and smaller trees in place and drops the material as a chip layer. Nothing gets hauled off and nothing gets burned, so you are not paying for either, and the ground is covered the day we leave instead of sitting bare through the next storm.

The machine is a tracked skid steer, which spreads weight better than a wheeled machine and does less damage to the ground you are keeping. It gets into country a dozer cannot work without tearing it up.

What it suits

One machine grinds the cedar, brush and scrub into a mulch bed and leaves it on the ground as cover.

Cedar breaks, understory brush, old fence lines and pasture that has crept in over ten or fifteen years. If a tract has been sitting while somebody meant to get to it, this is usually the answer.

Mark the trees you want kept and they stay. A mulcher works right up around a trunk without touching it, which is most of why owners pick it over a dozer. Walk the property with us or flag them before we start.

What it costs you in time

Speed depends on stem size and how thick it stands. Light brush moves quickly. A solid cedar thicket with six- or eight-inch trunks is slower, and heavy regrowth over old clearing is slower still.

We will tell you which one you have before the work starts rather than halfway through. The owner meets with you and walks the property first, big tract or small, because slope, soil and access change the number as much as the brush does.

Afterward

The chip layer holds moisture, slows regrowth for a season or two and breaks down into the soil. It is doing something, not just sitting there.

Regrowth is the real long-term cost on any cleared tract. Cedar comes back. Shredding the same ground once or twice a year afterward keeps it from ever becoming a mulching job again, and costs a fraction of the first pass.
